AGHADERG U-14’S ARE VALIANT IN CHAMPIONSHIP DEFEAT

Date Filed: 30 September 2020

Aghaderg U-14 Ladies football team were involved in a high scoring championship thriller against visiting Burren on Sunday. The girls were caught cold by Burren’s intensity at the start and in the opening quarter they fell victim to a five-goal blitz from the visitors and were left with a mountain to climb. Points from Clodagh Simpson and Cara Brackenbury, and a goal from Olivia Devlin began the fightback but they still trailed by eleven points at the water break.

Aghaderg were simply superb in the second quarter. Goals from Clodagh Simpson and Cara Brackenbury and points from Olivia Devlin, Cara Brackenbury and Niamh Moran brought them right back into contention and when Olivia Devlin rose high to punch to the Burren net, Aghaderg were amazingly back on level terms. It was a brilliant effort from the girls but just before the half time whistle, Burren broke up field to score a goal to leave the Reds trailing by three points at the interval.

Half time: Aghaderg 4-6 Burren 6-3

Two early points from Burren on the restart increased the deficit but Aghaderg were now applying much of the pressure and Heidi Devlin prodded the ball to the back of the net to leave just two points between the sides. Aghaderg had much of the possession but they struggled to translate the pressure into points on the scoreboard. Burren had a lead to defend and they drew players back to do that admirably and every so often they broke effectively and were clinical in their finishing. Clodagh Simpson stroked over three points for Aghaderg, but Burren hit 1-3 and the Reds had six points to claw back. Aghaderg pushed hard for those vital scores but they just would not come, and Burren broke away to score their eighth goal to secure victory in a thrilling game.

Final score: Aghaderg 5-9 Burren 8-8

Scorers: Clodagh Simpson(1-5), Olivia Devlin(2-1), Cara Brackenbury(1-2), Heidi Devlin(1-0), Niamh Moran(0-1)

The girls next championship match is away to Loughinisland on Sunday 11th October at 12.30.
