Aghaderg Senior Footballers back to winning ways

Date Filed: 12 August 2022

After suffering a first loss of the season to East Belfast, Aghaderg’s Senior Footballers were keen to get back to winning ways when they played away to Ardglass last night.

In overcast conditions, Aghaderg had the better of the early exchanges in the first half with points from Chrissy McEvoy and Joe O’Kane. Midway through the first half Aghaderg were leading by 5pts to 3pts but could have been further ahead with a little bit more patience and composure in the final third of the pitch. With Ardglass forcing the reds into several wides, the home side began to grow in confidence and a quick flurry of points followed by a goal saw them take a lead of 1-7 to 0-5.
Aghaderg finished out the first half with a point from Connor McGivern followed by another from a free kick to leave just a goal in it at half time.

Half time score: Ardglass 1-7 Aghaderg 0-7.

The rain arrived as the players came out for the second half but things started well for Aghaderg. An early free by Chrissy McEvoy followed by a well taken point by Michael Fitzpatrick brought it back to a one-point game. Aghaderg were now playing very patient football and enjoying the majority of possession as a result. Some nice build up play saw Michael Lennon put through on the Ardglass goal and he squeezed the ball home to put the visiting team back into the lead.
Aghaderg were now two points up and despite being a man down for 10 minutes due to a black card, they continued to dominate possession and kept the scoreboard ticking over with a further 6 points. Ardglass kept things interesting with a goal two minutes before the final whistle but Aghaderg held on to secure the win.

Final score:  Ardglass 2-10 Aghaderg 1-15.

This makes it nine wins out of ten which is the best season for Senior Football in many a year.

Well done to the boys on all their hard work.
