U-14 Hurlers Reach Ulster Feile Final 2011
03 May 2011
The U14 hurlers travelled to Liatroim on Saturday to take part in the Ulster Feile.
As in the games and tournaments in the previous few weeks, we were always missing a combination of three of our older, more experienced and bigger players. When we saw the line up in the group(Liatroim, Castleblaney, Sean Stinsons, Padraig Pearces, St Paul’s Belfast), we were going to be more than happy if we lost the games but competed.
Our first game was against Castleblaney. This match was very one sided. Ballyvarley’s midfield and half backs dominated and our full backs rarely saw a ball.
Our second game was against more formidable opponents St Pauls. The match was very even, but our boys failed to convert the chances they had made.
We lost that game 2-1 to 1-1
Our previous results were enough to get us into the semi final against Sean Stinsons. This should have been a much harder match against a team who had earlier beaten Liatroim by two points. Fortunately our players found their form and easily won the match only letting the other team score a solitary goal.
We had made it to our second final in a few weeks. This time we were against a much stronger and skillfull team. We shored up our defence which in the first half kept out all scores bar two points. Only for Nathan Jones being tripped in the box, we could easily have scored a goal. In the second half, we opened the scoring with a goal from a Stephen McKey free. Unfortunately as we went into attack mode, our defence was put under increased pressure and Liatroim scored a couple of very good goals.
Even though disappointed at losing a final, the day turned out to be very enjoyable and proved that we could be competitive with most teams on our day.
