Senior footballers record the first victory of the 2011 league campaign
07 May 2011
Last Thursday evening the 5
th
of May Aghaderg senior footballers recorded their first win in the 2011 league campaign.
The match was a home game against Aughlisnafin.
Aghaderg had the better of the first half and went in at half time with a comfortable 5 point lead. The reds opened very strongly with Kieran Maguire slotting home a goal and a point in the first few minutes. The half time score was Aghaderg (1 – 4) to Aughlisnafin’s (0 – 2). The first half scorers were Kieran Maguire (1 – 1), Eugene Devlin (0 – 2), Stevie Fitzsimmons (0 – 1).
The visitors came out very strongly in the second half and dominated possession for the first twenty minutes, bringing the gap down to 2 points with 10 minutes to play. If the visitors had been more accurate with their scoreable free kicks they could well have snatched the lead.
However sensing their opportunity the Aghaderg players then stepped up to the plate and controlled the last 10 minutes to run out comfortable winners. Stevie Fitzsimmons dominated midfield for the last fifteen minutes of play and created the platform for the Aghaderg revival.
Christopher McAvoy made an immediate impact when he came on as a substitute and gave a demonstration in text-book corner forward play. He did the simple things well. He came to meet the ball, was first to the ball and then laid it off to the attacking half-forward or midfield players. This created enough space for Aghaderg to build a bit of momentum and create some scoring opportunities.
Kieran Maguire was very influential throughout and was involved in all the positive movements by the Aghaderg team. We will have to try to ensure that the cameras are there for every game!
Aghaderg ran out 6 point winners at the final whistle but it has to be said that Aughlisnafin made them work hard for the victory in the second half. The final score was Aghaderg (1 – 8) Aughlisnafin (0 – 5). The second half scorers were Kieran Maguire (0 – 2), Eugene Devlin (0 – 1), Stevie Fitzsimmons (0 – 1).
This was an important result for the Aghaderg seniors as the team were missing some of its most experienced and influential players on the night. Hopefully the team will be able to build on this result and deliver some more victories and we move towards the Championship season.
