Aghaderg Members win Gaeltacht Scholarships

18 June 2012

Two members of the Aghaderg/Ballyvarley Club have won scholarships to the Gaeltacht from the Down County Board. Caoimhe Macauley, seen here at the presentation, and Cormac Lennon who was unable to attend were each given £100 towards the cost of their trip this summer. One hundred and twenty children had applied for the grants and had to attend an oral exam in Castlewellan at which they answered a series of questions in Irish and some in English about the importance of learning the language and what their culture meant to them. Only fifty children representing 24 of the clubs in Down were awarded the scholarships in a competition characterised by a very high standard of Irish, organisers said. The awards ceremony was attended by Down County Chairman Seamus Walsh and senior hurler Sean Ennis who spoke of his own experiences at the Irish College.
