St. Michael's v Aghaderg

Date Filed: 18 May 2017

A game of two halves.

Aghaderg  travelled to St Michaels on Friday last for the sixth round league fixture.  A last minute team change was made when S Comiskey was not available and R O'Neill was drafted in at full forward.  St Michaels were first to take the initiative as the reds found it difficult  to impose themselves on the contest. G Rice was withdrawn from the full forward line to act as sweeper but this led to the St Michaels no 7, B Morgan having the freedom of the pitch. He was used as the launch pad for the home team's attacks and dictated play for most of the first half.  The visitors struggled to get the ball out of defence, the mid field were playing second fiddle while the forwards were starved of quality possession. St Michaels kept the scoreboard ticking over and at half time were leading by 1 -6 to 0-0.

The second half was to see a major change as Aghaderg came out in a much more determined mood. K Davis was delegated to man mark B Morgan and proceeded to greatly reduce his influence. The mid field of P McGrath and L Murray started to win the majority of possession. R Strain, A McAvoy and C Lennon all contributed to the turn round in fortunes. Eventually P McGrath opened the scoring with a 45metre free. C McAvoy was getting more possession and got his first point of the evening from play and converted two frees after C Comiskey and L Murray were fouled by a very physical home team who managed to pick up five yellow cards for their over zealous defending.  St Michaels were living off scraps but managed to add on two points from frees. P McGrath from play and C McAvoy from a free completed the reds scoring to leave the final score St Michaels 1 -8 Aghaderg 0 - 7.

The Reds will be disappointed with their first half performance when they simply could not get into the game. They will be pleased with their second half performance  as they dominated proceedings  for most of the half and had a number of opportunities to take both points but the difficult conditions combined with some erratic  passing robbed them of a few scoring chances.
