ADDED TIME GOAL DENIES BALLYVARLEY CHAMPIONSHIP GLORY
Date Filed: 24 September 2018
A goal in the
fifth minute of added time produced shattering despair for Ballyvarley
and unbridled joy for Patrick Rankins, such was the excitement in this
brilliant U16 Hurling Championship Final in Leitrim.
Little had
separated two skilful sides throughout this well contested showpiece
finale to the season and with the game entering added-on time,
Ballyvarley led by one point and dared to dream of championship glory. But
heartbreak was to follow as the Warrenpoint/Newry combination first
produced an equalising point and then right on the final whistle they
forced home that last second winning goal just when both sides were
thinking of an added period of extra time. Nevertheless, it has been a
great season for this promising U-16 team and the local support showed
their appreciation for the players and their management by turning up in
large numbers in Leitrim to cheer them on in this thrilling game.
