AGHADERG PIPPED AT THE POST IN OPENING GAME

Date Filed: 17 July 2020

AGHADERG 1-8 MITCHELS 1-10

The sun did not shine on Aghaderg’s return to action after the Covid lockdown but both sides strove with enthusiasm to produce a very competitive game of football on a wet and miserable night. The best football was reserved for the first half and after Mitchels eased into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead, Aghaderg produced their best football and with Chrissy McAvoy leading the line, they were good value for a 0-6 to 0-3 advantage.

It would have been nice to have taken that lead into the interval, but the visitors punished a few miss-directed passes to leave the half time score Aghaderg 0-6 Mitchels 0-5.

The Reds failed to get going in the second half and a goal and a point from the Newry side left Aghaderg trailing by three points. A Chrissy McAvoy point was all Aghaderg had to show for their second half efforts as Mitchels edged into a four-point lead. Then with seven minutes to go Cailum Meara created the opening for a rousing goal from Jamie Murray and that galvanised the home side for a final push. When Christopher Lennon fired over the equalising point it looked odds on a home victory but in the final moments of the game it was Mitchels who discovered that little bit extra and two late points produced a hard-fought victory for the visitors in an entertaining game.
