Goals Galore!

20 May 2024

What an exceptional game of hurling tonight from the reds. The game started at a frantic pace with both sides trading wonderful points, notably two surging runs up the middle from half back from Ciaron Davis for identical great points, also good play from Niall Lennon to recycle the ball back to Mick Lennon who pointed out on the wing. Niall and Matthew Malone were a thorn in the side of Portaferry the whole evening linking up well for a  good few points, quickly followed by a goal by Matthew Malone which came from a monster puck out from Paddy McGrath which Matthew won beat his man and fizzed it into the corner. Portaferry continued to keep the points ticking over, we replied with our two midfielders Sean and Darragh knocking over good points. Good defending from wee Tam and big Tam meant there were no goals conceded in the first half.

Half Time
Ballyvarley 1-10        Portaferry 0-13

The second half got off to a flyer for the Reds, long puck out again from Paddy was won on the break by Mick Lennon, who couldn’t execute the right pass but to his credit made a fantastic block and turned the ball over and with a clever flick to send Matthew Malone bearing down on the Portaferry net who made a perfect handpass to find Niall Lennon with a free shot and rocketed it into the bottom Corner. The goals kept coming for the reds in the second half, 2 came in quick succession both from long range frees from Matthew. Niall  Lennon kept the scoreboard ticking over as well throughout the half, Niall Burns began to find space to play the ball into Matthew who won the ball but for once missed, with the keeper making a good save but luckily for us James Teague followed in on the rebound, The reds were 11 points up at this stage and cruising, Portaferry had no option but to throw the kitchen sink at the reds, good defending from Ory McLean resulted in the Reds getting a few turnovers, unfortunately Portaferry to their credit kept at it and managed to score 3 goals in the last 5 minutes to make it very tight. The half forward line dug deep and won a few puckouts to ease the pressure on the defence and the whole team were able to get the game over the line with a 2 point Victory.

Well done to the whole team  who played a great game against Portaferry  with 46 scores in 60 minutes of play. And Especially Matthew Malone who became only the 8th Different player in Ballyvarley History to score 4 goals in one game.
