Match Report

Ardglass 4-16, Aghaderg 2-9

Date Filed: 21 April 2017

Aghaderg travelled to Ardglass on Wednesday evening to play a rearranged league fixture.  Management had to make two changes due to work commitments, Graeme Donaghy and a work place injury, Collie Comiskey. Conditions were ideal for an evening match and Aghaderg started very much on the front foot as their close passing and support play had Ardglass often chasing shadows in the first five minutes. However a misplaced pass and inaccurate shooting meant that the reds had nothing to show on the scoreboard. The home team were first on the scoreboard as a long diagonal ball was fielded by the full forward who rounded Ryan Strain and dispatched a firm shot to the back of the net. Two points soon followed and after ten minutes the visitors were five points down even though they had the majority of possession. Aghaderg fought back first with a point from C McAvoy and then the score of the game when a movement which started with Colgan in goal passed through six pairs of hands and was finished to the back of the net by C McAvoy. A point from P McGrath tied the scores after fifteen minutes.

The second quarter commenced with Ardglass playing the long ball into their full forward who again finished to the back of the net. Aghaderg kept up the pressure and were winning a lot of possession around the middle of the field where P McGrath made a number of marks from the kick outs from both goalkeepers. The second quarter was evenly contested with points from P McGrath(0-2) K Doyle (0-1) and R McShane(0-1)

Half time score Ardglass 2 -6 Aghaderg 1-7.

The second half commenced with the reds winning plenty of possession but were unable to turn it into scores as many unforced errors resulted in cheap turnovers. Ardglass continued to play the high ball into their dominant full forward who scored his third goal and finished with 3 -5 from play and a number of frees which were converted. The visitors tried three different defenders on him but he proved more than a match for each one of them. Aghaderg continued to plug away and scored two points from C McAvoy and a goal from C Lennon after a long through ball from A McAvoy.

There were many positives to be taken from the display. A score of 2-9 will win many matches and they will seldom meet a full forward in such form. Best in defence were C Lennon and G Rice while P McGrath and L Murray won their share of possession. C McAvoy, K Doyle and J McGrath were the most prominent forwards on the night. Man of the match was shared by the two hardest working players on the pitch P McGrath and C McAvoy who also scored 1 -7 of the 2 -9 total.
